The Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) is a non-commercial federal entity and one of 14 bureaus in the Department of Commerce (DOC). Its major function is the examination and issuance of patents and the examination and registration of trademarks. The site includes a "how-to" section, information about the PTO, information related to patents, information related to trademarks, a place to check on the status of a patent or trademark, a searchable database of patents and trademarks, and answers to frequently asked questions.
